Hotel Whitby - Über Whitby
Whitby (dänisch: weiße Stadt) ist eine historische Hafenstadt an der Nordseeküste der Grafschaft Yorkshire in England. Sie liegt an der Mündung des Esks, des Flusses, der in einem tiefen Tal durch das um die Stadt liegende North-York-Moor fließt. Whitby zählt 13.740 Einwohner (2001) und gehört zum Bezirk Scarborough.
Die Stadt war Ausbildungsstätte für einen von Großbritanniens bedeutendsten Seefahrern, James Cook. Die Schiffe seiner zahlreichen Seereisen wurden hier gebaut und auch die bedeutende Südseereise von 1768 nahm hier ihren Anfang. Die Schiffe Whitby Cats oder Whitby Colliers, robuste Kohletransporter, die hier nach norwegischen Vorbildern gebaut wurden, nutzte Cook für alle seine Südseereisen. Das Haus der Familie Walker, in dem Cook seine Lehre machte, beherbergt heute das „Captain Cook Memorial Museum“. Sein Denkmal überblickt den Hafen der Stadt.
Als Bram Stoker 1890 in Whitby residierte, diente die kleine Stadt als Inspiration und Kulisse für sein Meisterwerk Dracula, das 1897 veröffentlicht wurde: Bei seiner Reise nach England landete Graf Dracula mit seinem Schiff in Whitby an. Die Stadt hat daher ein Dracula-Museum. Folgende Beschreibung von Stoker hat auch heute noch Gültigkeit, da es keine großen baulichen Veränderungen mehr gab:
„This is a lovely place. The little river, the Esk, runs through a deep valley, which broadens out as it comes near the harbour. A great viaduct runs across, with high piers, through with the view seems, somehow, farther away than it really is. The valley is beautiful green, and it is so steep that when you are on the high land on either side you look right across it, unless you are near enough to see down. The houses of the old town – the side away from us – are all red-roofed, and seem piled up one over the other anyhow It is a most noble ruin, of immense size, and full of beautiful and romantic bits; there is a legend that a white lady is seen in one of the windows. Between it and the town there is another church, the parish one, round which is a big graveyard, all full of tombstones. This is, to my mind, the nicest spot in Whitby, for it lies right over the town, and has full view over the harbour and over the bay, to where the headland called Kettleness stretches out into the sea.”
Die Stadt ist heute ein typisch englischer See-Erholungsort mit charaktervollen alten Gebäuden, Museen und den Ruinen der Abtei, die auch schon Bram Stoker so beeindruckt haben. Wenn man vom Hafen zur St. Mary's Church und zu Whitby Abbey will, muss man erst 199 Stufen erklimmen. Dies war ehemals besonders für die Sargträger eine Tortur, weswegen ab und an Plattformen zur Rast eingebaut wurden.
Zweimal im Jahr findet das Whitby Gothic Weekend statt, ursprünglich ein Fest für Angehörige der Gothic-Kultur.
Einmal jährlich (August) findet ein Folk-Festival statt.
